Overview

About AO Arena

The AO Arena holds up to around 21,000 for concerts, with a full lower and upper tier wrapping 360 degrees around a floor that seats or, at around 6,200 standing, hosts a general-admission crowd. The best concert seats are in the lower-tier blocks facing an end stage and the front of the floor, while the upper tier (blocks 200 and above) climbs steeply and the top rows sit a long way back and high up. Formerly the MEN Arena and Manchester Arena, it is the city's flagship indoor venue for concerts, comedy, boxing and family shows.

Opened in 1995 and built partly over Manchester Victoria station in air-rights space, the AO Arena is one of the UK's largest indoor arenas and is notable for being the only major British arena with a full 360-degree bowl of seating on both tiers. A major refurbishment has modernised the concourses and premium spaces while keeping the vast, enclosed bowl that makes big shows feel intense.

Seat views

Arena floor

Floor blocks, lettered or numbered depending on the show

The floor is flat and sold seated or standing depending on the show. You are closest to the stage here, but on a standing floor the view depends on the height of the crowd in front, because there is no rake.

Tip: Floor tickets use the Trinity Tunnel entrance on Trinity Way, which has a lift down to the floor. Under 14s and people using crutches or walking aids are not allowed on a standing floor.

Lower tier, sides

102 to 105 and 112 to 115

Fixed tiered blocks along the two long sides, so you see an end stage at an angle. The blocks nearest the stage (102 and 115) are the most side on, and the angle gets straighter towards 105 and 112. The venue warns that seats sold as side view may not see the screens.

Tip: You enter the lower tier at the top and walk down, and row A is 73 steps down. If you are in rows A to C, the venue suggests taking the lift to the floor instead.

Lower tier, facing the stage

106 to 111

These blocks curve round the end of the arena opposite the stage, giving a straight on view over the floor. They are the lower tier seats furthest from the stage, but raised above the floor crowd.

Tip: The wheelchair platforms are in blocks 108 and 109, with more in block 105.

Upper tier, sides

202 to 205 and 212 to 215

Above the lower tier on the same sides, with a higher, side on view of an end stage. Each row is three steps above the one in front, so the back rows are high up.

Tip: The handrail in the upper tier is intermittent, and there is a lift to the top of the tier if you would rather walk down to your row.

Upper tier, facing the stage

206 to 211

The full head on view of the stage, screens and lighting, and the furthest seats from an end stage.

Tip: If steps are a problem, avoid the back rows. From the top of the tier, row A is 50 steps down.

Stage end

101 and 116 to 122 (lower), 201 and 216 to 222 (upper)

On the official venue map the stage sits at this end, in front of blocks 117 to 121, so these seats are beside or behind it. When they are sold, they are labelled side view, restricted view or rear view.

Tip: Check the view label on the event page before you buy. The same block can be sold as rear view for an in the round show and not sold at all for an end stage show.

Seat numbers

How AO Arena seat numbers work

The block number tells you the tier: 101 to 122 is the lower tier and 201 to 222 is the upper tier. For an end stage the fixed seating in front of the stage runs from block 102 round to block 115. Rows are lettered and skip I and O, with row A at the front: the lower tier runs to row X and the upper tier to row R. In blocks 102 to 105 and 202 to 205, seat 1 is nearest the stage, and in 112 to 115 and 212 to 215 it is furthest from the stage. Floor blocks are set per show, so check your event plan.

Reading a ticket: Block 104, Row K, Seat 3: block 104 starts with a 1, so it is in the lower tier on one long side. Row K is the tenth row from the front (A to H, then J and K, as there is no I). Seat 3 is near the stage end of the row, because seat 1 in blocks 102 to 105 is nearest the stage.

Concerts

AO Arena floor plan for concerts

The official venue map shows an end stage in front of blocks 117 to 121, with a seated or standing floor in front of it and lower (100s) and upper (200s) blocks round the rest of the arena. Some shows go in the round, which opens up seats behind the stage. Each show's plan is on its ticket page.

The floor: Standing or seated depending on the promoter, with floor block names set per show. People using crutches or walking aids, and under 14s, are not allowed on a standing floor.

The stage: At the end of the arena bordered by blocks 116 to 122 (lower) and 216 to 222 (upper).

Side on: 102 to 105 and 112 to 115, plus 202 to 205 and 212 to 215 above. Facing the stage: 106 to 111 and 206 to 211. Beside or behind the stage: 101, 116 to 122, 201 and 216 to 222.
