Overview

About Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl is Los Angeles' historic open-air amphitheatre and the summer home of the LA Phil, with a seating capacity of about 17,500. The Hollywood Bowl seating chart climbs the hill from the John Williams Stage. At the front is the Pool Circle, then the Garden Boxes, Promenade 1, the Terrace Boxes (flanked by sections D and E), Promenade 2, and the Super Seats in the centre (sections G1, H and J1) with sections F1 to F3 and K1 to K3 either side. Above Promenade 3 the bench sections carry on up the hill, lettered L, M, N and P, then Q to U, then V, W and X at the top. Box seats have folding chairs and room for a picnic, the Super Seats are cushioned theatre style seats with backs and arms, and the upper benches are the furthest from the stage, where the video screens do much of the work. Side boxes beside Ramps A and E give an angled view close to the stage.

An open-air amphitheatre cut into a natural hillside bowl in the Hollywood Hills, opened on 11 July 1922. Its famous concentric arched band shell was rebuilt in 2004 in the spirit of the 1929 original, and the stage is now named the John Williams Stage. Seating climbs the hill from the Pool Circle at the front to bench sections at the top, with video screens and a modern sound system helping the back rows.

Capacity & layout

Hollywood Bowl seating capacity and layouts

The Hollywood Bowl seating capacity is about 17,500 seats. The number in use changes with the layout, so here is how each set-up works.

LA Phil presented concerts

The summer season of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, plus other concerts the LA Phil presents. You may bring your own food, and containers must fit under your seat or inside your box.

Lease events (touring artists)

Concerts by visiting promoters, sold through Ticketmaster. Where the calendar says 'Special House Rules Apply', outside alcohol is not allowed, and valet parking is at the artist's discretion.

Special events

Seasonal events such as Opening Night use the same fixed layout; there is no separate floor, and every seat faces the stage.

Sections

Seating levels explained

Pool Circle

The ring of seats right in front of the John Williams Stage, named the Norman & Sadie Lee Foundation Pool Circle on the grounds map. How the area is set out can vary by event.

Pros: The closest seats to the performers.

Cons: A small area with few seats; you are at stage level rather than looking over the whole shell.

Garden Boxes

Boxed seating behind the Pool Circle, with folding chairs in each box. Boxes are numbered; Garden Boxes 643 and 944 are the accessible boxes.

Pros: Close to the stage with room for your picnic inside the box.

Cons: Boxes towards the ends of each row look at the stage at an angle.

Terrace Boxes

The next band of boxes up the hill, wider and higher than the Garden Boxes, with bench sections D and E at either end.

Pros: A raised, central view of the whole shell while keeping box seating for a picnic.

Cons: Further back than the Garden Boxes; the end boxes are off to the side.

Sections D and ED, E

Two seating sections flanking the Terrace Boxes, reached step free by elevator from Promenade 2. The last row of each has accessible seating.

Pros: Close to the stage for non box seats.

Cons: Side on to the stage compared with the central boxes.

Super Seats and flanking sectionsG1, H, J1 (Super Seats); G2, J2; F1-F3; K1-K3

The Super Seats in sections G1, H and J1 are theatre style metal seats with cushioned seats, backs and arms. Sections G2 and J2 sit beside them, with F1 to F3 on one side and K1 to K3 on the other, all off Promenade 3.

Pros: Comfortable individual seats with a straight, central view of the stage.

Cons: Mid way up the bowl, so the performers look small without the screens.

Upper bench sectionsL-X

The bench sections that climb the top of the hill: L, M, N and P, then Q, R, S, T and U, then V, W and X at the very top. Cushion rental is available on site.

Pros: The full sweep of the Bowl, the shell and the hills around it.

Cons: The furthest seats from the stage, reached by a climb, with bench seating.

Seat views

Hollywood Bowl view from your seat

Pool Circle

Pool Circle

Right at the front of the John Williams Stage, close enough to see the performers clearly without the screens.

Tip: The set-up of the Pool Circle can change by event, so check the seating chart for your concert.

Garden Boxes

Garden Boxes, including accessible boxes 643 and 944

A close, slightly raised view from a private box of folding chairs, just behind the Pool Circle and below Promenade 1.

Tip: Bring a picnic: food and containers must fit inside your box.

Terrace Boxes

Terrace Boxes between Promenade 1 and Promenade 2

Higher up than the Garden Boxes, so you see the whole shell and stage lighting, still within easy reach of the stage.

Tip: The central Terrace Boxes give the straightest view; boxes near sections D and E look across at an angle.

Side boxes by Ramps A and E

307 to 309, 407 to 409, 507 to 509 (Ramp A side); 374 to 376, 475 to 477, 575 to 577 (Ramp E side)

Boxes at the sides of the front seating, near the stage but looking at it side on.

Tip: These boxes and Ramps A and E are step free, near Promenade 1.

Sections D and E

D and E

Seats either side of the Terrace Boxes, fairly close to the stage but angled towards it.

Tip: Reached by elevator from Promenade 2 with no steps; accessible seating is in the last row.

Super Seats and F, G, J, K sections

G1, H, J1 (Super Seats); G2, J2; F1 to F3; K1 to K3

A central, mid bowl view straight down to the stage, in cushioned theatre style seats in the Super Seats. F and K sections sit to either side.

Tip: Section H is the centre of the Super Seats.

Upper benches

L, M, N, P; Q to U; V, W, X

Looking down the whole bowl to the shell, with the hills around you. The performers are small at this distance, so the video screens carry much of the show.

Tip: Rent a cushion on site for the benches, and bring a layer for the evening.

Seat numbers

How Hollywood Bowl seat numbers work

The Bowl mixes boxes and lettered sections. Boxes in the Garden, Terrace and side areas each have a box number, for example Garden Boxes 643 and 944 and side boxes 307 to 309 and 374 to 376 on the official accessible seating map, and your ticket shows the box and your seat in it. Everything from sections D and E upwards uses letters, and some sections are split into numbered parts: F1 to F3, G1 and G2, H, J1 and J2, K1 to K3. Above Promenade 3 the sections run L, M, N and P, then Q to U, then V, W and X at the top. Your ticket gives the section, row and seat.

Reading a ticket: Section K2: one of the three K sections beside the Super Seats, off Promenade 3, on the opposite side of the Super Seats from F1 to F3.

Concerts

Hollywood Bowl floor plan for concerts

The Bowl has a fixed layout: every seat faces the John Williams Stage at the bottom of the hill, so the seating chart is broadly the same for every concert.

The floor: There is no standing arena floor. The Pool Circle is the closest seating area, and how it is set out can vary by event.

The stage: The permanent band shell at the foot of the bowl, known as the John Williams Stage.

Video screens help the upper sections. Side boxes by Ramps A and E and the end boxes on each row see the stage at an angle.

Logistics

How to get to Hollywood Bowl

Transport

The Bowl is at 2301 N Highland Avenue, next to the 101 freeway. The official advice is to use Park & Ride buses from lots across LA County or the Bowl Shuttle from closer lots; by Metro, take the B Line to Hollywood/Highland and catch the free Bowl shuttle at Ovation Hollywood with a valid TAP card. Parking at the Bowl is very limited and stack parked with no early exit: Lot A (Blue) has valet and stacked parking, Lot B (Green) is the Park & Ride and shuttle hub plus accessible parking, Lot C (Purple) is the rideshare hub (6655 Odin St) with no parking, and Lot D (Yellow) is general parking. Passes are sold in advance through JustPark, lots open three hours before the show, and the Bowl asks guests not to park in the surrounding neighbourhoods. Arrive at least 90 minutes before the performance.

The area

The Bowl sits in the Cahuenga Pass in the Hollywood Hills, about a mile north of the Hollywood/Highland Metro station and the Ovation Hollywood complex. The grounds include picnic areas, restaurants and the Hollywood Bowl Museum, so many people arrive early and eat on site.
