Overview

About PNC Park

PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, seats 38,747 for baseball in a compact two-deck bowl, one of the smallest capacities in Major League Baseball. On the PNC Park seating chart the lower deck holds the Field Level boxes (sections 1 to 32) in front of the Box Level (101 to 132), with the left-field bleachers (133 to 138) and right-field Outfield Reserved seats (139 to 147) beyond the fences. The upper deck starts with the 200 Level, including the Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level (207 to 228), and rises to the Grandstand (301 to 333) and the Rooftop above left field. Around 26,000 of the seats are on the first level and every seat outside the bleachers looks out at the Pittsburgh skyline. The Pirates dugout is on the third-base side, which is also the side with the best line to the city and bridges. The best overall seats are the infield sections between the dugouts (Home Plate Club, Dugout Boxes and Infield Box 109 to 124); the best value is the Grandstand infield (309 to 323), where the view from your seat takes in the whole field, the river and the skyline.

PNC Park opened in 2001 on the North Shore of the Allegheny River, designed by HOK Sport (now Populous) with L.D. Astorino & Associates in a retro-classic style of limestone, steel truss work and arches. It was the first two-deck ballpark built in the United States since 1953, which keeps the upper deck unusually low: the highest seat is 88 feet above the field. The 21-foot right-field wall honours Roberto Clemente's number, and the Clemente Bridge, the river and the downtown skyline fill the view beyond the outfield.

Capacity & layout

PNC Park seating capacity and layouts

The PNC Park seating capacity is about 38,747 seats. The number in use changes with the layout, so here is how each set-up works.

MLB baseball (Pittsburgh Pirates)

The standard layout, seating 38,747. The home dugout is on the third-base line, unusual for a ballpark and chosen to give the Pirates a view of the skyline. Protective netting runs from section 101 through section 130.

Concerts

PNC Park has hosted stadium shows from acts including Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Ed Sheeran, Metallica and Def Leppard with Mötley Crüe. The stage is normally built in the outfield with seats and often a general admission area on the grass, so the infield bowl faces the stage. Layouts change by tour, so always check the seat map for your show.

Special events

The ballpark hosted the 2006 MLB All-Star Game and uses its hospitality spaces, such as the Left Field Lounge and AHN Picnic Park on the Riverwalk, for group events on game days.

Sections

Seating levels explained

Field Level1-32

Small field-level sections at the very front of the lower deck, from the right-field corner (1) round behind home plate to the left-field corner (32). They include the Dugout Boxes behind the visitors (9 to 13, first-base side) and the Pirates (20 to 24, third-base side) and the Home Plate Club behind the plate.

Pros: Closest seats to the field, with the dugouts and home plate right in front of you. Third-base sections face the skyline.

Cons: Very little shade for day games, and the concourse is at the top of the 100 level behind you, so trips out mean a long walk up.

Box Level (lower bowl)101-132

The main lower bowl from the right-field corner (101) round to the left-field corner (132), rising behind the Field Level seats. Infield Box sections 109 to 124 sit between the bases; 101 to 108 and 125 to 132 run down the lines. Rows are lettered, with single letters at the front and double letters towards the back.

Pros: A comfortable raised angle on the whole field. The back rows are sheltered by the upper deck and are close to the main concourse.

Cons: Front rows do not reach the field because of the Field Level seats in front. The Pirates ask lower-bowl fans to wait for a break in play before returning to their seats.

Outfield: Bleachers and Outfield Reserved133-147 (plus upper bleachers 235-238)

The left-field bleachers (133 to 138, with upper bleacher sections 235 to 238 above) have bench seating with back rests beside the bullpens. The right-field Outfield Reserved seats (139 to 147) have standard stadium chairs behind the 21-foot Clemente Wall.

Pros: The cheapest way into the lower deck and the best spots for home run balls. A lively, social atmosphere near the Riverwalk bars.

Cons: Exposed to the sun, and the bleachers are the only seats without a view of the skyline. Left-field fans must turn right round to watch the main video board.

Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level207-228

Club sections at the front of the upper deck, with wider cushioned outdoor seats and extra legroom, backed by an indoor climate-controlled concourse with three private bars: Wigle Reserve, Wigle Whiskey and City of Champions Bourbon.

Pros: Short sections with an easy walk to the club concourse. Elevated infield sightlines with the skyline beyond.

Cons: Premium pricing, and little overhead cover, so day games can be very sunny.

Grandstand (300 Level) and Rooftop301-333 (Rooftop 335-339)

The upper-deck Grandstand, split into infield sections (309 to 323) and down-the-line sections, with the group-focused Rooftop deck above the left-field bleachers. Because PNC Park has only two decks, even the top of the Grandstand is just 88 feet above the field.

Pros: The lowest prices in the bowl and the best panoramic view of the bridges, river and downtown skyline.

Cons: The furthest seats from home plate. Left-field corner sections (around 330 to 333) and the Rooftop struggle to see the main video board.

Seat views

PNC Park view from your seat

Home Plate Club and Dugout Boxes

Home Plate Club 14 to 19 (plus rows A to E of 20); Dugout Boxes 9 to 13 (visitors) and 20 to 24 (Pirates)

Field-level seats between the dugouts, with a straight look at the pitcher and batter and the players just in front of you. From the third-base side the view out beyond the outfield takes in the skyline and bridges.

Tip: In section 20 only rows A to E belong to the Home Plate Club, so check the row before paying the club price.

Field Level down the lines

1 to 8 (first-base side) and 25 to 32 (third-base side)

Small sections of about 8 to 13 rows running towards the foul poles, very close to the field. Sections 30 to 32 near the left-field corner are angled nicely back towards the infield.

Tip: Pick the first-base side for a clearer look at the video board and the third-base side for the skyline. Bring sun cream for day games.

Infield Box

109 to 124

The heart of the lower bowl between the bases. The first rows sit slightly above field level because the Field Level seats are in front, which gives a comfortable angle on the whole diamond.

Tip: The double-letter rows near the back are sheltered from sun and rain by the deck above and are closest to the concourse.

Box Level down the lines

101 to 108 and 125 to 132

Large lower sections between the corner bases and the foul poles, good foul ball territory with the field running away from you towards the outfield.

Tip: Upper rows are well covered by the deck above. Protective netting extends from section 101 through 130.

Left-field bleachers and right-field Outfield Reserved

Bleachers 133 to 138 (upper bleachers 235 to 238); Outfield Reserved 139 to 147

Looking in from beyond the fences, home run territory with the bullpens beside section 138. These are the sunniest seats in the park, and the bleachers are the only seats that do not face the skyline.

Tip: Right field has proper seats instead of benches, and sections 139 to 141 are smaller, which means a shorter walk from the concourse.

Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level

207 to 228 (infield 209 to 223)

The front of the upper deck, raised enough to read every play, with the video board, the river and the bridges in view behind the outfield.

Tip: Sections nearest home plate give the most balanced view; the far ends (207 and 228) are usually the cheapest way into the club.

Grandstand infield

309 to 323

The classic PNC Park postcard view: the whole field below with the Clemente Bridge and downtown skyline beyond centre field. Distant from the batter, but never as high as upper decks at bigger ballparks.

Tip: Rows R and higher in 309 to 312 and 320 to 323 sit under the roof for cover.

Grandstand down the lines and Rooftop

301 to 308 and 325 to 333; Rooftop 335 to 339

The furthest seats from home plate. The Rooftop deck above the left-field bleachers is mainly sold to groups and has its own outdoor concourse with bar-top tables.

Tip: If you want to follow the video board, choose the right-field side; sections 330 to 333 near the left-field corner find it hard to see.

Seat numbers

How PNC Park seat numbers work

The section number tells you where you are. One and two digit sections (1 to 32) are the Field Level boxes at the front of the lower deck, running from the right-field corner round behind home plate to the left-field corner. The 100s are the lower bowl: 101 starts in right field and the numbers climb round to 132 in left field, then 133 to 138 are the left-field bleachers and 139 to 147 the right-field Outfield Reserved seats. The 200s are the front of the upper deck, including the Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level (207 to 228) and the upper bleachers (235 to 238), and the 300s are the Grandstand, with the Rooftop (335 to 339) above left field. Rows are lettered from A at the front of each section; in the bigger lower-bowl sections the single letters give way to double-letter rows at the back.

Reading a ticket: Section 20, Row C: Field Level, directly behind the Pirates dugout on the third-base side. Row C is the third row from the front, and rows A to E of section 20 form part of the Home Plate Club.

Concerts

PNC Park floor plan for concerts

PNC Park concerts usually place the stage in the outfield, facing home plate, with the infield bowl looking straight at it. The seating chart changes from tour to tour, so use the map for your show.

The floor: The grass is sold as reserved field seats, sometimes with a general admission standing area nearest the stage. Field rows are flat, so the view further back depends on the crowd in front.

The stage: Normally in the outfield or around second base, with the skyline and Clemente Bridge behind it.

Seats behind home plate in the lower bowl and on the Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level face the stage head on; down-the-line and corner sections see it from an angle.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the seating capacity of PNC Park?

PNC Park seats 38,747 for Pirates games, one of the smallest capacities in Major League Baseball. About 26,000 of those seats are on the first level.

How is the PNC Park seating map laid out?

The lower deck has the Field Level boxes (sections 1 to 32) in front of the Box Level (101 to 132), with the left-field bleachers (133 to 138) and right-field Outfield Reserved seats (139 to 147) beyond the fences. The upper deck holds the 200 Level, including the Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level (207 to 228), and the Grandstand (301 to 333), with the Rooftop above left field. The official 3D seat map on the Pirates website shows every section.

How do section, row and seat numbers work at PNC Park?

The first digit of the section gives the level: 1 to 32 are Field Level, 100s the lower bowl and outfield, 200s the front of the upper deck and 300s the Grandstand. Within each level the numbers run from the right-field side round to left field. Rows are lettered from A at the front, with double-letter rows at the back of the bigger lower sections. Seat numbers are printed on each seat, but the Pirates do not publish which aisle seat 1 starts from.

What are the best seats at PNC Park?

For the closest view, pick the infield between the dugouts: the Home Plate Club (14 to 19), the Dugout Boxes (9 to 13 and 20 to 24) or the Infield Box (109 to 124). For value, the Grandstand infield (309 to 323) gives a full view of the field and the skyline for much less.

What is the view from my seat like at PNC Park?

Almost every seat looks out over the outfield to the Clemente Bridge, the Allegheny River and downtown, and Wikipedia notes that every seat except the bleachers has a skyline view. The third-base side has the best line to the city and bridges, while the first-base side sees the video board more easily. Use the Pirates' 3D seat map to preview the view from any section.

Which side is the Pirates dugout on?

Unusually, the home dugout is on the third-base side, facing the skyline. The Dugout Box sections behind it are roughly 20 to 24, with the visitors behind 9 to 13 on the first-base side.

Where is parking for PNC Park?

Garages and surface lots surround the ballpark on the North Shore, and more are downtown across the river, from where you can walk over the Clemente Bridge. The Pirates refer fans to ALCO Parking (412-323-4455) and Champions Garage, and accessible spaces are in all the nearby garages. The T light rail to North Side Station is free from downtown within the Free Fare Zone, which avoids parking altogether.

Which seats at PNC Park are in the shade or covered?

The back double-letter rows of the lower bowl (101 to 132) are sheltered by the deck above, and rows R and higher in Grandstand sections 309 to 312 and 320 to 323 sit under the roof. The Field Level, outfield seats and the Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level get the most sun.

Is PNC Park accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes. Accessible and companion seating is available throughout the ballpark, lifts serve every level from the Right Field entrance (section 101) and the Mazeroski Way and West General Robinson suite entrances, and drop-off zones are on Mazeroski Way and West General Robinson Street. Exchanges into accessible seats can be made at any ticket window or at Main Guest Relations in the Home Plate Rotunda.

Can I bring food into PNC Park?

Yes. Guests can bring their own food and a sealed, clear plastic water bottle of up to 24 ounces, but not into the Home Plate Club, the Suite Level or the Left Field Lounge. Bags must be soft-sided and no bigger than 16 by 16 by 8 inches.

Which seats are best for concerts at PNC Park?

PNC Park has hosted stadium shows from acts including Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Ed Sheeran, Metallica and Def Leppard with Mötley Crüe. The stage is normally built in the outfield with seats and often a general admission area on the grass, so the infield bowl faces the stage. Layouts change by tour, so always check the seat map for your show. For specific sections, aim for Field seats nearest the stage, or infield sections behind home plate — With the stage in the outfield, the infield bowl faces the show head on.

How do section numbers work at PNC Park?

Section numbers at PNC Park follow the seating tiers. Field Level: 1-32; Box Level (lower bowl): 101-132; Outfield: Bleachers and Outfield Reserved: 133-147 (plus upper bleachers 235-238); Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level: 207-228; Grandstand (300 Level) and Rooftop: 301-333 (Rooftop 335-339).

What are the stands at PNC Park?

PNC Park is made up of 5 main stands: Field Level; Box Level (lower bowl); Outfield: Bleachers and Outfield Reserved; Pittsburgh Baseball Club Level; Grandstand (300 Level) and Rooftop.
